Weekly Wrap Up - 25th March 2009

Well it was one for the books last night - beginners were treated to some teacher teaching teacher action as Duncan and I took a romantic turn in our Charleston class. We taught "Dating Charleston" that included moves such as "surfer dude", "bowling" and "at the disco". Sounds intriguing right?? if you want to know more.. pop into class 8.00 Wednesday nights at the Queens Head in North Hobart OR - ask a beginner for a Charleston dance!!

The last lesson for Level One Swing Outs brought a tear to my eye, what a bitter sweet moment it is when such a large group of students graduate!! If you are keen to keep the swing out momentum going (heheh all pun intended), Barry and Kara will be picking up where Duncan and I left off, to polish up what you have, and to give you some more moves to add into your collection, at 6.00 April 1st (no april fools joke - serious, this is what they will be teaching next week).

Barry will do a double header for the month and will also teach an introduction to Balboa with me at 7.00. This is a BLOCK class, so attendance for all four classes is required. No experience is needed, so if you are looking for something new - this is the class for you.

Next month the level two class at 6.00 will do some more bal, if you are planning on attending those classes, you MUST attend this intro block (unless you have done a bal block or classes previously - please see Barry or my self for more info).

Ideally it would be great if all level one students stuck with Level One but also continued with their Swing Outs in Level Two, AND if all Level Two students came back to Level One for a visit and Balboa basics as well as staying in their Level Two class for some fancy pants Swing Out Action.

We are trying to make sure everyone has a clear path for progression, but also a clear direction as to where they can go to make sure they have their basics squared away. The design is to ensure there is an a two way travel situation between Level One and Level Two, allowing students to move up and down, not just always up and up (and missing out on essentials along the way).

Reading about it can be kinda confusing.. I like using lots of hand gestures, so come and see me if you need further clarification (or a puppet play) and I promise to make more sense of it!

Moonah Cars Rock and Bowl

Well the weekend was not all I had planned it to be, with deep regret and sorrow - I failed to make it to this years Cars Rock and Bowl. By the looks of the crazy cats who made it along, perhaps its time I hand over my baton, to the young swing kids in the scene.

Massive thanks to Olivia who rallied the troups, and grabbed all the info from Colin at Ultralux, I bet she had no idea that these crazy kittens would dress up and make it so special for everyone.

I am truly sorry to have missed it!

I did however manage to catch some of the fun at the Ally Cat bar on Friday night, our local bands gave these mainlanders a run for their money.. It was fast and loud (a bit like me after my third pint im afraid)! The fashion really took place in Moonah though by the looks of it, I cant wait to see these guys swinging into class with their snazzy threads!! HINT HINT.

ps - thanks to sal for the rockin pic

Weekly Wrap Up - 18th March 2009

OMG - how late am I with last weeks up date?? Very late and I'm sorry!!
I would like to claim that my tartyness had something to do with being very busy, or because i was whisked away to some remote island for some raunchy weekend.. but alas.. just a case of extreme laziness I'm afraid!

Lets not wallow on the past - lets just move forward with the future..

This week is the last week of the Swing Out block, NEXT MONTH IS BAL!!! I cant wait!! For those of you who tried it out the other week at the Central.. I hope you fell in love with it, if you missed the evening, don't be scared - you don't need any Bal experience to come along to the Block in APRIL!!

Beginners - we will be doing Charleston again this week, but you know the drill, no previous experience needed!!

AND - I shall be filling in for Kara at 6.00, so any donations of beer or food would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry its such a sort blog today - you wait for the next one.. should be super!!

Weekly Wrap Up - 11th March 2009

Hellooo BOYS!!
Congrats to the fine ladies who I assume are luring in all the gents into class, I know it cant just be me, because rumor has it, all 4 classes last night were lead heavy!!

Kudos does have to be given to the leads for swinging into class, and sweeping the follows off their feet, keep up the good work everyone!!

Week Two of the Swing Out Block too my breath away!! Everyone has come so far in such a such a short amount of time, FINALLY you will be able to bust out that move you have seen everyone else pull out on the dance floor! This week we achieved a mini sequence consisting of, a basic (from open to open), a sugar push, a basic into closed, and then from closed into open!! I know I have been strict on you all, and Duncan does love telling us all how important the basic is (and I completely agree!!) but next week I think its time to have some fun, shake it up a little, and do some inside/outside turns!!

Beginners Six Count, welcomed back a few familiar faces, with plenty of more experienced ladies offering to learn the lead! Fortunately or unfortunately, we were lead heavy - big thanks to Liv for stepping in and helping fix the ratio! This class taught, Six Count with triple steps, underarm send out, free change of place and the ole standard come back in.

Everyone keep up the great work, class numbers have exploded, but from experience I happen to know we are on the verge of cold and flu season, so now is the time to get as many of our friends and family involved, to help keep us running when the weather gets colder.

Dont forget to check the tasswing newsletter for more details on upcoming events, such as Tassies one and only Devil City Swing. More brownies will be on sale next week!

Till then, keep your shoes clean, and your collars pressed!!

For inspiration check out http://www.daddyos.com/
You will also find something for the guys to wear.. bite your knuckles girls, you will meet all of your future loves on this website!!

If you love what you see, but don't want to buy on line - head on in to Ultralux (Criterion St - Hobart), Colin or one of his handsome crew will sort you out with everything you need, skirts, shirts, shoes, and take a Cars Rock and Bowl flier with you, it will be a day you want to keep a memento of! Colin often stocks the same brands as you will find on line - but also has a great range of beautiful new friends for you to meet and wear.

News Just In - Dance but Non Swing

Attn All: Read below the fantastic email from a current beginner student - If i went already committed on Monday nights, this is where I would be! I honestly believe music and dance is good for the soul (we all know I need all the help I can get), so if you do make it along to the dance classes below, please leave me a comment, or email me, with your feedback!!
Relle

"One and all are invited to an informal twice-monthly Medieval and Renaissance Dance class in Hobart meeting on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month at Irish Murphy's (in Salamanca) from 7.00pm - 9.00pm.. No experience necessary, all dances taught. There is no fee for the class, the venue being free. However, feel free to purchase a beverage of your choice from the pub in appreciation of their generous offer of the space. For more information contact Amanda at 6267-1706. Note: if the venue gets booked by paying customers, our class gets canceled. So far this has happened only once, during the Christmas Holidays, but the possibility exists."

4th March Class Wrap Up

WOO! How amazing was last night? It was FANTASTIC. A massive thanks to everyone who turned up for the Swing Out Block - numbers were massive and even (an even massive-er thanks to one special lady who chose to learn how to lead!).

We got all the way though "a swing out", next week we will look at starting from closed, and ending in closed.. Till then ladies remember "step, step, triple step, sideways, backwards, triple step".. Guys im not sure what secrets Duncan "Danger" Robinson told you, but keep up whatever you were doing, everything was looking great!

Beginners classes had a real treat, Duncan morphed into Duncan "i dont wanna do triple steps" Robinson, so it was six count with kicks!! The rain did not cool down the heat of the class - with a red hot pace set early on, and was cranked up a notch just before the end of class.. Was great to see a heap of beginers downstairs having a lemonade after class! Well done to everyone!

Just a reminder that the Tasswing Swing Out block starts THIS WED (4th March) at the queens head at 7.00! You need to be available and committed to doing all four weeks of the block.. I hear on the streets of Tasswing Town that next month in Kara and Barry's class there will be the opportunity to learn more advanced swing out moves... Sso now is the perfect time to learn the basic from scratch or polish up to make sure you can move up!
