Whats New for March on Wed Nights

Swing Outs!! Yep - you asked for them so Duncan and Relle will give them to you!! Well we will teach them to you!!

For the month of March Swing Outs will be taught at the Queens Head at 7.00. This is a block styled class, meaning there is an expectation to turn up for each of the four lessons.

You can pay in advance and purchase a monthly pass - very economical for students who will continue with beginners classes (recommended!!), or you can pay on the night, however, students who miss classes will have to arrange a catch up with their teacher (not another student) or wait for the next time Swing Outs are taught.

If you have already completed a Swing Out block and you are thinking about coming back for a refresher, the expectation is still for you to attend all four classes. Extenuating circumstances can be discussed with Duncan or myself!

I am personally really looking forward to teaching this dance and hope to see the healthy numbers we have had so far in the 7.00 class!!

See you there!

The End (for now) of an Era

Last night was bitter sweet for all of us I think. Class numbers again massive, fast Charleston in beginners class took the pace to a whole new height, BUT, it was Bryce's last night of teaching for Tasswing (for a while).

It feels like Bryce and I have been teaching forever, and it is with great fondness that I look back on all of our classes (I hope students past and present do the same!). The good news is, Bryce is not moving away or quitting swing all together, he is just taking a teaching break to concentrate on his studies, so you will see him around the usual traps I'm sure!!

Stay tuned to the Tasswing newsletter for details of Bryce's guest appearances in class schedules, I know we all loved his Blues class with Kara, and I certainly know I would jump at the opportunity to teach with him again if ever he gets a break from his grueling study deadlines!!

I was asked last night what my favourite memory of teaching with Bryce was, and I spent a restless night trying to think of an answer to that question. Really there have been so many! For me our demos in beginners class always leave me a little weak in the knees and heart a flutter (could be the aerials we do!!), all of the subtle and not so subtle dirty jokes we would make in class, and all of the times we demonstrated "what not do to" made teaching with Bryce an absolute pleasure.

I might be getting a little nostalgic, but its hard not to!! Feel free to leave a comment on the best, and worst of "Bryce and Relle" (or Bryce and any of the other teachers), I'm sure there are stack we have forgotten or blocked out!!

Stray Cats - Aust Tour

Well - of course I had to go see the Stray Cats, they are after all the reason I dance! Its a long and confusing tale, of bribing bouncers at clubs with baked cheese cakes, teaching said bouncers to knit on the job, and watching the film clip to Jump Jive and Wail.

The long and the short of it is this, that film clip inspired me to do my first ever swing dance lesson, wayyyyy back in the day and the song itself has since resulted in many a frenzied dance at a variety of venues, and this weekend I was hoping to bust out my best at the Forum in melb.. BUT.. fail.

Even though they did a few of my other fave's (including Stray Cat Strut) they did not do "my" song. I left feeling slightly disappointed, that I did not get my song, but plenty happy that I managed to see them at all!

At the end of the evening I had seen a drummer stand on his drums, the bass player pick up his bass and play it like it was a mandolin, both the drummer and the bass player punch the day lights out of their instruments, and Brian's hair stay in place all night.. not bad for Friday night!

Even though it had nothing to do with swing, the other high light of the night was popping across the road to the pub and busting out to random pub cover band "Drive". At least three hrs and as many pints of Little Creatures later, I was blistered, deaf, exhausted, and ready to go home!

Massive shout out to Kara, for being as always my booking agent and tour guide - without her, i probably could not dress myself in the mornings. Also big thanks to the fine Melb peeps who put us up for the weekend, nothing beats a fold out couch, a warm shower, and a glass of red at bed time! And a crazy hoorah for the swing crew who danced in the street, fed square, myer and other assorted venues on Sunday.. stay tuned for links to more info!

Class Wrap Up - 18th Feb 2009

WRAP UP
Whoa - is it just me or has the Hobart swing community increased dramatically this year? There is barely room to swing a cat, let along a cute girl in class!! The consolidation of our Tuesday and Wednesday classes, the restructure of class times and venues, and the introduction of monthly specialty nights seem to be just what the good doctor ordered!

Barry and Kara are steaming forward with gusto, please be sure to check the Tasswing newsletter for more info on the "Camp Oz" revision that was put on offer last night.

The 7.00 class offered both a challenge and an opportunity to refine everyone's skills and talents! The class was put together to offer suggestions in how to combine Six Count and Charleston as well as show a new way of doing Six Count (with kick steps!!).

Beginners class nearly ballooned out of control, a massive thanks to who ever is putting the good word out there! Numbers are high, energy is high, the instructional volume is high!! This week was first week Charleston, with a few reverse Charlestons, Double Kicks and the ole Hip Flick.

A special hello and thank you to some students who came back this week after being away, its always a fuzzy feeling to see the return of long lost students, especially ones who are just popping back to Hobart for a visit!!

A big welcome to students who are thinking about coming along next week, don't worry, just because it will be our second week of Charleston, you do not need any dancing experience. We always start from scratch and build our way up! Looking forward to meeting you all!

WHATS NEW
Next week at 7.00 Duncan and I will introduce/revise getting into, getting out of, and moves within Tandem Charleston (the Charleston where the follow stands in front of the lead). New students are welcome to this class, provided you have a fairly sound knowledge of the Six Count basic and the Charleston basic.

March will see us commit to a MONTH BLOCK for the 7.00 class, to teach Swing Outs to students new to this move. As always, students who would like to revise their Swing Outs are more than welcome, however this block is really aimed at introducing this move to students who have not been introduced before! It would be really great to try to get even numbers as far as leads and follows, numbers have been great in both the current 7.00 and the 8.00 class.. Keep up the good work!!

For students who are interested in moving up to the 7.00 class, sticking with the 7.00 class (or popping in from the 6.00 class), it might be a good idea for you to think about investing in a monthly pass! For 60.00 you can purchase a pass that will get you into ANY Tasswing class for 30 days. This means all you have to do is attend the 7.00 and the 8.00 class, as well as a specialty class and your pass has well and truely paid for its self!

First Tuesday Blues Night 09 - Wrap up by Kara

Thanks SO much to everyone that came along to the Central Cafe and Bar on Tuesday night and supported our first monthly Blues/Balboa night. Bryce and I were both really rapt that so many of you were keen to unleash your blues animal (hehe). Both Bryce and I are regular attenders of Church City Blues in Adelaide and I have taught several times on the mainland and so we were both extremely excited to have the chance to share our love of blues with you. As this was the first one, there were a number of parts to our new monthly classes that we had never road tested before, but we think that everything went great! Please email us with any feedback or suggestions (kara@tasswing.com.au)! Stay tuned for the details of our next monthly installment which will be a trip to the island of Balboa.

Welcome One and All to the All New Rellezaboppin blog!

Welcome one and all to the all new Rellezaboppin blog!

Regular readers of the Tasswing newsletter will be quite used to my posts to the weekly newsletter that Dave sends out, however, to help keep that newsletter short and sharp, I thought it might be a good idea to start a blog and link you to it, rather than monopolize your afternoon break and the majority of the newsletter!

If you just found the blog by accident and want to find out more about swing dancing in hobart, email me at relled@gmail.com, I can answer your questions and even sign you up for the newsletter if you would like!

Other wise, stay tuned for post by me, and the other Tasswing Teachers!
